What is Physically and Mentally Nourishing Food?

This episode is actually extracted and repurposed from one of the lessons I did for the Stop Binge Eating Program.


The diet industry often tells you what you should eat, how much to eat, to cut out foods, count calories, go low-carb... but these rules often lead to overeating because strict rules usually result in having an all-or-nothing mindset, which leads to people saying "screw it, I'll start over again tomorrow" as soon as they "break" the rules.

The same mindset also exists if you're just judging foods as good or bad, or trying to diet, whether you succeed or not.


In this episode, we dive deeper into the concept of physically and mentally nourishing foods.




Episode Summary

Note: the concept of physical and mental nourishment is NOT black and white.


Food falls across a spectrum. Some food may provide more of a certain mineral or macro (physical nourishment), and some foods are more fun to eat (mental nourishment).


What is "nourishment"?

  • how does the food make you feel physically and mentally?

  • It is an experiment and takes some trial-and-error.

  • It can change over time and depending on the circumstances.


Physical Nourishment

  • The energy and macronutrient composition (e.g. calories, carbohydrates, fats, and protein)

  • Different macronutrients have different functions in the body, so it is important not to cut out entire food groups.

  • micronutrients (vitamins and minerals)

  • On a more personal level: how does the food affect you physically? (e.g. digestive issues, energy levels?)


Probably until now, all the diets you've been on have just focused on physical nourishment (e.g. how many calories? Is this low-carb? Is this going to help with weight loss?)



Being physically full doesn't always translate to feeling satisfied. Satisfied is both a physical and mental feeling. Feeling full is just physical. The more you meet your body and mind's needs, the more you feel satisfied, the less likely you're going to have cravings and urges to eat. The more nutritional variety, the fewer cravings you will have.


Mental nourishment

  • What food do you enjoy eating?

  • There's nothing wrong with enjoying food. Food gives us pleasure and connects us with other people. It's an integral part of many cultures. It's meant to be enjoyed. It only becomes a problem if food is your only way of coping when you're feeling stressed, tired, or lonely.


There are some days when your body needs less energy and some days when your body needs more.

Diets teach you not to trust yourself and the needs of your body but instead follow a set of rigid rules, which then throws your body out of whack and creates cravings, emotional eating, or even binging. Once you start adding in nourishing meals, choosing a variety of foods, without restricting, you're getting everything you need naturally over time and your cravings and binge urges are massively reduced.


Think of your food choices from an "eat more" and "eat less" point of view. Shift your mindset from what should take out to what you can add to your diet.
