Meal Prep Tips and Tricks

If you are hoping to start meal prepping more often, here are some must-have tools in the kitchen.


Secret Tool: Ice Cube Trays

If you wanna level up your meal prep game, consider buying some silicon ice cube trays.


There are lots of different ways you can use them creatively to make your meal prep easier.

  • freeze leftover smoothies and use them to add flavor to your drinks.

  • coffee ice cubes: add flavor to your protein shakes or yogurt to add a hint of coffee flavor to your drinks.

  • Another benefit of using flavored ice cubes also is that your drinks won't get watered down.

  • also great for sauces, soups and dips. For example, you can make a batch of fresh pesto or curry sauce. Add them to sauces, or stir-fries for extra flavor.

  • common base ingredients e.g. broth. Simply drop an ice cube of frozen stock into the pan while you’re cooking your sauces, risotto, or even plain rice or pasta dishes to help reinvigorate them with moisture and liven up the flavors in your dishes or even leftovers.

  • Fruits e.g. lemon and lime juice, canned pumpkin. Drop a cube into your morning bowl of oatmeal before heating, or put a few into your morning smoothie

  • Dessert batter e.g. cookies or muffin batter/mixture : you can make a batch of cookie dough, put a few spoonfuls into the trays and freeze.

Any ice cube trays work, but the reason I suggest using silicone ice cube trays is that they're the easiest for removing your cubes smoothly.

I also suggest using different sizes for different foods, because smaller cubes are ideal for things like sauces and smoothies, while larger cubes can be used to freeze mini portions of leftover soups and stews.



Food Storage Tips


If you have decided that you want to meal prep for more than a few days in advance, then obviously, storage is very important.


Food storage containers are some of the most essential meal prep tools.

If you’re currently working with a cupboard full of mismatched containers with missing lids, you’ll probably find the process pretty frustrating and disheartening.

You may get away with using these containers for a couple of days, but if you intend to keep your food for more than a few days, it’s well worth your time and money to invest in better-quality airtight containers.

Otherwise, you're putting the health of yourself and your family at risk.


Airtight containers offer better protection and freshness.

If you don't have a lot of space in your fridge or freezer, you can save space by using large resealable airtight plastic bags and squeeze out any extra air. This works particularly well for single-serving sizes of chilis and stews! When you need to use them, simply run them under warm water, then heat them in the microwave or on the stove.

On that note, make sure your containers (food bags or food boxes) are airtight, freezer-friendly and microwave-friendly.


Another increasingly popular container is mason jars because they can be so versatile.

They are great for storing salads, soups, oatmeals, smoothies, pasta, grains, or even meat...almost anything. Most are dishwasher- and microwave-safe, water-tight and sturdy. They also make great grab-and-go options.



Lastly, don't forget to label your containers or food bags.

Have you ever had the experience of opening your freezer and then wondering what you've stored because everything just looks pretty much the same?

This is especially important if you store some of the meals or ingredients for a long time because it's so easy to forget.

On the label, you should write what food or meal it is and the date that you prepared or stored the meal.
