Mastering Color Idioms (part 4/4)

In this last part of my 4-part color idioms series, we will explore 5 more fascinating color idioms that will help you enhance your English vocabulary and add even more color to your language.





See Red (verb phrase)

Definition: To become furious or enraged 暴怒

Example: When John found out his wallet was stolen, he saw red and started shouting at everyone in the vicinity 附近.

記憶方法: The phrase "see red" originates from the physical reaction of one's face turning red due to anger.



In the Red

Definition: To be in debt or have negative financial status 資金虧損

Example: The company's poor financial management left them in the red, struggling to pay their bills and salaries.

記憶方法: The idiom "in the red" is derived from traditional accounting practices where negative figures were written in red ink to indicate losses.



White Elephant (noun phrase)

Definition: Something that is costly or burdensome to maintain, often without providing any significant benefit. 昂貴而無用的東西 This idiom refers to an object or property that becomes a financial burden or a waste of resources.

Example: The old mansion became a white elephant for the family as they could not afford its upkeep 修理 and had no use for it.

記憶方法/典故: The term "white elephant" originated from the practice of ancient Southeast Asian kings gifting rare white elephants to those who displeased them as a financial burden.



Talk a Blue Streak (verb phrase)

Definition: To speak rapidly and without pause or interruption. 滔滔不絕

Example: Sarah was so excited about her trip that she talked a blue streak, sharing every detail and story she could remember.

Usage: This idiom is used to describe someone who speaks rapidly and at great length.

記憶方法: The phrase "talk a blue streak" suggests a continuous stream of words that may appear like a streak of color.



In the Pink

Definition: To be in good health or a good condition. 非常健康,精神煥發, 滿面紅光 This idiom signifies being in a healthy or optimal state.

Example: After a long vacation, Mary returned to work refreshed and in the pink of health.

Additional Notes: The expression "in the pink" originated from the old English term "pink of perfection," which meant the highest degree of excellence.
