If not counting calories, then how to lose weight? (Counting Calories: Part 2)

​The number of people worldwide actively dieting to lose weight is at an all-time high.



In my previous post, I explained the dangers of counting calories (or any restrictive diets) and promised I'd give you 3 tips to help you get out of this restrictive diet mindset.


So how can you lose weight and keep it off without counting calories or any other restrictive diets?


1. Tune in with your internal cues.

All diet rules are external rules. Continuing to rely on these rules lead you to lose trust in your body. Be intentional about checking in with your body regularly to see what time you tend to feel hungry, what foods keep you satiated. Plan your meals based on your needs, not what the diet industry tells you.

Gradually, you'll be more in-tune with your body and you'll feel a lot more confident about trusting your body and not external rules.



2. Focus on variety and colors. Not just calories.

Calories say nothing about the nutrients food provides. Instead of counting calories, focus on eating whole, nutrient-dense foods such as fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats that meet your body's needs. These foods are generally lower in calories and more filling, so you'll feel satisfied and nourished without having to count every calorie. Once you've met your body's needs, your cravings also reduce massively.



3. One step at a time

​Going cold turkey can be a recipe for disaster...because the sudden loss of rules can cause your eating to spiral out of control. You don't have to stop counting calories (or macros or points) overnight. Reduce the frequency.

​Wean off this habit slowly whilst you tune in with your body's hunger and fullness cues gradually.
